Sendo Tran has spent more than 25 years on mats and in rings. Ask him why he started, and the answer has little to do with medals.

He wanted to help young people, especially kids from all kinds of backgrounds, believe they could better themselves through discipline. That was the whole idea. Everything since has grown out of it.

Today Tran is the Founder and CEO of Primallete and a familiar name in the mixed martial arts community. He is also, by any count, a very decorated competitor.

A Fighter Who Wouldn’t Pick One Style

Most martial artists settle into a single discipline and spend their lives on it. Sendo Tran didn’t. He has competed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, Kickboxing, Muay Thai and Kudo, which is a lot of different rule books to learn.

The results followed. He has first, second and

Kata and poomsae are about precision and form. Sparring is about thinking fast with someone trying to beat you. Podium finishes in both tell you he can do more than one thing well.

The Coach Side of the Story

At some point the teaching took over from the competing. Sendo Tran coaches athletes of every age and ability, not only the naturally gifted ones. He says the aim is to produce confident, respectful, positive people who happen to do martial arts.

His methods are plain. Patience, encouragement, and leading by example. He talks about helping younger students show good sportsmanship and push to be their best, in the gym and outside it.

It is not a flashy philosophy. It is the kind that works slowly, one student at a time, and rarely makes headlines.

Recognition From the Community

When asked for his three biggest professional achievements, Sendo Tran lists them without fuss. In 2025 he was inducted into the American Sport Hall of Fame. He holds certificates from the Senate for his contributions to the Korean community. He also has a certification from the president of the Korean American foundations.

Two of those three have nothing to do with winning a match. They come from people who saw the work he does for the community and wanted to say so.

Nominated at IMA 2026

This year brings more of the same. Sendo Tran has been nominated for the Outstanding Leadership Award and the Legendary Achiever Award at IMA 2026.

One award looks at how a person guides others. The other looks at a long body of work. To be nominated for both says something about how people see him, and it is not only about the fighting.

Sendo Tran

Those who know him tend to say the same things. He is generous, he is honest, and he wants other people to succeed. Students and fellow martial artists describe a community that doesn’t stop at the dojo door, where people look out for each other.

What He Says He Stands For

Sendo Tran describes his own approach in four words: respect, discipline, perseverance and humility. They are the values martial arts are supposed to teach, he says, and he tries to live them rather than lecture about them.

It is easy to say that. It is harder to be the person a nervous eight-year-old or a doubtful teenager watches closely, week after week. That is the job he has chosen.

Where He Wants to Go Next

Ask about the next three to five years, and Sendo Tran keeps it short. He wants to build a community and a group of leaders who keep inspiring and motivating others to be better. And he wants them to treat people with kindness.

There is no target number, no expansion plan, no grand announcement. Just a hope that the people he trains will go on to do the same for someone else.

For a man with this many medals, it is an oddly modest goal. It also might be the most telling thing he said. His supporters say the real measure of his career is not the trophies but the lives he has touched. Tran seems to agree, and he is still working on it.
